Do you love sea stacks? Do you long to explore hidden coves with sandy beaches and small tree-topped islands that stretch as far as the eye can see? If so, Secret Beach is the place for you!
Introduction
Between Brookings and Gold Beach lies the Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor. Named after the first Oregon State Parks superintendent, this twelve-mile stretch has some of the most fantastic coastal spots in the state. Some would say it is one of the most beautiful stretches along the western seaboard.
Highlights include Arch Rock Picnic Area, Secret Beach, Natural Bridges, China Beach, Indian Sands Loop, Whaleshead Beach, House Rock Viewpoint, Cape Ferrelo, and Lone Ranch Beach.
Secret Beach is one of the most awesome not-so-secret locations. Although many other beaches are similar, Secret Beach just has everything in one tiny location.
The main cove includes two small waterfalls, multiple sea stacks, hiking trails, and a small beach ideal for a picnic. The very first glimpse you see as you come to the end of the trail is a protruding rock with a lone pine tree perfectly framing the cove.
Getting There
Secret Beach lies at the northern end of the scenic corridor between Arch Rock Picnic Area and Natural Bridges. The parking area is unmarked but easy enough to find.
Specifically, look for the parking area along the west side of the Oregon Coast Highway between Spruce Island Viewpoint and Wilderness Drive. Watch for a small turn-off just prior to the beginning of a guardrail along the road. A small gravel lot exists with enough room for approximately six vehicles.
The Details
The trail down to Secret Beach is an easy hike but can get slippery in regularly wet conditions. The trail is about ¾ of a mile and has an elevation variance of around 400’. It is a 10-15 minute hike one-way.
The Oregon Coast Trail connects Secret Beach to numerous coves throughout the area. Take your time and explore the many amazing little spots along the coast here or bring a blanket and have a picnic.
All seasons are great for enjoying Secret Beach. Winter can bring rainy conditions but is just as enjoyable as the often foggy summer months.
This is a phenomenal location at both sunrise and sunset. Visiting during low tide also allows for easier access to the many hidden coves.
Conclusion
Secret Beach is one of the most magnificent locations along the Oregon coast! It is a special place and should not be missed if you ever find yourself in the area. Regardless of the location’s popular status, we have visited many times and still had the place to ourselves.
